Stephen King may be best known for writing contemporary horror fiction, but this week he is gaining some attention for writing a check to the Coalition for a Safer Maine.

Earlier this month, Maine authors Stephen and Tabitha King donated a large sum of money to assist the statewide gun control advocacy group in pushing forward to enforce stricter gun laws.

According to the organization’s website, the Kings stand behind important legislation that will ultimately serve to impose stricter gun laws, including expanded background checks, bans on high-capacity magazines and the enforcement of tighter regulations that prevent the mentally ill from owning firearms.

“We are grateful for the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. King at this pivotal moment in our efforts to establish common sense gun regulations in Maine. This gift, along with many other gifts from like-minded people around the state, will be used immediately to fund our advocacy efforts,” said coalition co-chairman Larry Gilbert.

Former U.S. Attorney and coalition co-chairman Paula Silsby says that Stephen King owns three handguns and has strong convictions towards maintaining the Second Amendment. However, he also believes that with those rights comes a responsibility to keep people safe by implementing reasonable laws.

While the immediate amount of the King’s donation is not known, there is speculation that it was a generous five-figure gift.
