
Man Sentenced to 18 Months for Firearms Possession in Maine
A 35-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
18 Months in Federal Prison for Firearms Charges
Kulmiye Abukar Idris from Lewiston will be sent to federal prison and the 18 month sentence will be served consecutively with a 42-month state prison sentence for Gross Sexual Assault.
Sentenced Handed Down with Three Years Supervised Release
Idris will also have three years of supervised release. His sentence was handed down in U.S. District Court by Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr.
Officers Seized Handgun from Vehicle after Traffic Stop
Idris was arrested in January 2025 after police stopped a vehicle he was driving for traffic violations. The vehicle was searched and officers seized a handgun.
Previous Charges for Gross Sexual Assault Prohibited Man from Possessing Firearms
“Idris had previously been convicted in 2024 for gross sexual assault in Androscoggin County and was, therefore, prohibited from possessing firearms,” according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Lead Investigators Involved in the Firearms Case
The lead investigators in the case included the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Lewiston Police Department and assistance from the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.
