The Boston Red Sox lost both games of the day/night doubleheader to the Detroit Tigers in Fenway Park on Tuesday, April 23rd, dropping the 1st game 7-4 and the nightcap 4-2.

In the night game, Michael Chavis hit his 1st major league home run, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers scored 3 runs in the 4th inning off of Hector Velazquez. Velazquez started in the place of Nathan Eovaldi who had elbow surgery on Tuesday, to remove loose objects in his elbow. Eovaldi will be out 6 weeks.

Velazquez went 3.1 innings allowing 3 hits, striking out 5 and walking 2. Darwinzon Hernandez made his major league debut in relief, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits and striking out 4 while walking 1.

Chavis was 2-4 and Andrew Benintendi was 3-4.

In the day game,  Chris Sale went 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits including a homer. He struck out 10 and walked 2. He didn't get a decision as the bullpen lost the game with Heath Hembree, Colton Breewer and Bobby Poyner allowing 5 runs. Brewer took the loss allowing 3 runs.

The Red Sox only managed 5 hits in the 1st game, but Xander Bogaerts had 2 of them, each of them a solo homer.

The Red Sox are 9-15, 4.5 games behind the 1st place Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox will play the Tigers Wednesday night with the pregame starting at 6:10 and first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1370 WDEA. Eduardo Rodriguez is scheduled to pitch for Boston
