Kennebunk, Maine, Is Home to the Oldest Inn in the Entire Country
Nestled along our beautiful coastline of Kennebunk, Maine, the Seaside Inn holds the title of being the oldest continuously operating inn in the United States. With roots tracing back to 1660, it was founded by Samuel Stone, a key figure in Kennebunk’s early settlement. What started as a tavern for travelers officially became an inn by 1667, and it’s been in the same family for nine generations.
The Seaside Inn isn’t just the oldest inn in the country — it’s also the oldest family-run inn in the U.S., and the fifth oldest family-run business in the country, according to Family Business Magazine. That’s pretty impressive. On top of that, it’s ranked 46th among the oldest family-run businesses in the world. This speaks volumes about its long-lasting legacy and dedication to hospitality.
Over the years, the inn has gone through its share of renovations but has always kept its original charm, offering the perfect blend of historic character and modern comfort. Its rich history is part of what makes this inn so special, and it’s no surprise that visitors flock to Kennebunk, a coastal town known for its stunning beaches, local shops, restaurants, and historic sites, including where former President George H.W. Bush and his family spent their summers.
I had no idea that this was the oldest in the country until I saw a story on News Center Maine, where they interviewed owner Ken Mason. It was shortly after the historic building took a hit in January of 2024 when those powerful coastal storms hammered Maine’s coastline. It’s been over a year, and luckily Maine’s coastline hasn’t seen anything comparable.
However, according to News Center Maine, as of October 2024, repairs to the seawall are still pending, leaving the inn vulnerable to further storm damage. Town officials have noted that the restoration process could take months, or even years, to complete.
