According to a new report, Maine is taking the situation of human trafficking more seriously, but the state's laws geared towards protection from these tyrannical crimes are still some of the most primitive of all the states.

The Polaris Project released it’s latest ratings of the state human trafficking laws earlier this week, which showed that while Maine did move up from tier three to tier two, the state fell short of being included in the project’s top tier.

However, even though a new law that amends “promotion of prostitution” to “sex trafficking” helped move Maine up in the ratings, the state's lack of law enforcement training in regards to human trafficking is what ultimately kept it from ranking in the top tier.

The good news is that Maine rated better than New Hampshire, which is one of six states across the country to fall into the tier three spot. Yet, that is still not the worst – South Dakota is the only state that ranks in tier four.
