Mount Desert Island Ranked as One of the Best Islands in the Country

Mount Desert Island (MDI), located off the coast of our Pine Tree State, has been ranked as one of the top favorite islands in the continental United States by the readers of Travel + Leisure. As part of the annual "World's Best Awards" survey, T+L asked its readers to share their opinions on various travel experiences, including islands, and MDI emerged as a cherished destination for those seeking an island getaway.

The readers rated the islands based on several criteria, including natural attractions and beaches, activities and sights, restaurants and food, people and friendliness, as well as value. Each respondent had the opportunity to rate these characteristics as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores were calculated by averaging these responses.

At the summit of the list is the Golden Isles in Georgia, comprising Jekyll Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and St. Simons Island. Taking the second spot is Mackinac Island in Michigan, followed by Kiawah Island in South Carolina. Claiming the fourth place, we have MDI, while Hilton Head Island, also in South Carolina, rounds out the top five.
