Unexpected Shark Sighting Leaves Fishermen in Awe on Maine Waters
Three people were enjoying a day out fishing off the coast of Maine when they saw what they thought was a dolphin. This was not a dolphin.
Mako Shark
According to WMUR, the shark was spotted near Moody Beach in Wells, Maine, around 7 a.m. by Whitney Fitzgerald, Luke Ramsey, and Christopher Ramsay. Originally, they thought it was a dolphin or a baby whale until they got a better look at it when it approached their boat.
They all made sure not to disturb the shark, because um....it's a shark.
How Dangerous Are Mako Sharks?
According to Wikipedia, short-finned mako sharks are the fastest swimmers of all sharks in the ocean. They can even leap out of the water with their swimming speed. So yeah, they can be dangerous, but only when provoked. Unprovoked attacks on humans are rare, with only 10 unprovoked attacks on humans by makos worldwide through 2022.

Endangered Species
The short-fin Mako is on the endangered species list. Some estimates show a decline of 60-96% globally. You shouldn't worry about them; just be sure to give them their space, as the ocean is their home and you're the visitor.
This is the second shark sighting in Maine after a great white shark was spotted near Scarborough on August 12, 2025, and was caught on video the next day.
Officials want to remind people to report any shark sightings they may witness, no matter the species. Most of the time, they are harmless and will avoid humans, but keep your distance if you see one.
