Privacy Journal’s research team evaluated six key factors that impact how safe each state is for online dating. They gathered data from trusted sources like the Federal Trade Commission, the Internet Crime Complaint Center, and SafeHome, then assigned weighted points to each factor based on importance to create the final rankings.

Well, according to the data, we know that we’re among the safest—but where exactly did Maine rank when it comes to online dating safety?

According to Privacy Journal and its recent report highlighting ‘The Safest States for Online Dating in 2025,’ Maine ranked 2nd, behind only fellow New England state Vermont.

Maine ranks as the second-safest state for online dating, thanks to its nation-leading low rate of violent crime reports, with nearby New Hampshire taking third overall.

Privacy Journal continues that while the Northeastern states scored high for safety, they all fell short in one category—romance scam reports.
