But how do we know how much Mainers are spending, and who is making this distinction?

WalletHub’s report on personal care spending ranked the 50 states by analyzing the price of basic items like toothpaste and shampoo, then adjusting those costs against each state’s median monthly income. To keep things simple, the study only considered one unit of each product, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Council for Community and Economic Research as of September 18th, 2025.

So, given that, where does our state rank, and how much of our median monthly household income is going toward these products?

According to WalletHub and their recent report, ‘States Where People Spend the Most on Personal Care Products,’ Maine ranked 24th overall, with the cost of personal care products making up 0.9% of the median monthly household income.

Maine shares the 0.9% tag with 14 other states, including big names like Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

That said, Maine spends the most on personal care products in New England, with Vermont and Rhode Island each at 0.8%, and Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts at 0.7%.
