While pickleball is often called the ‘fastest-growing sport’ in America, its popularity is really picking up here in Maine!

This isn’t an exaggeration—folks really love pickleball, and honestly, what’s not to love? It’s simple to learn, has easy-to-follow rules, feels familiar if you’ve played other paddle or racket sports, and best of all, it’s fun and accessible for all ages and fitness levels.

So, how do we know which states in America like—or, to be frank, even care about—pickleball, let alone love it?

To figure out which states are truly 'obsessed' with pickleball, Action Network created a ‘Pickleball Obsession Index’ using three key factors: the number of courts per capita, annual Google searches, and a Google Trends interest score. Each factor was weighted based on how much it reflects access to the sport and public interest, giving a fuller picture of each state’s passion for pickleball.

What are the details behind Maine’s growing ‘obsession’ with pickleball? And how do we compare to other states?

According to Action Network and their report highlighting ‘America’s Most Pickleball-Obsessed States,’ Maine ranks 4th in the country—just behind Vermont (which took the top spot), Hawaii, and UtahAction Network had the following to say about Maine’s results:

Just missing out on a podium finish, Maine is the fourth-most pickleball-obsessed state in America. While it has a Google Trends interest rating of just 43, it scores strongly in other categories.

Maine has over 120 pickleball courts statewide—about 8.7 per 100,000 people—and recorded 166,000 searches for the sport in the past year.

Those numbers helped Maine earn an index score of 4.85, highlighting how much interest in the sport is growing here—again, according to Action Network.
