The majority of Maine’s laws have been put in place to help protect the public against a lunatic society; however, we recently uncovered a number of laws across the state that make us question who the lunatics really are. Seriously, you might be surprised to find that it is against the law to do the following:

  • It’s against the law in Maine to step out of a plane while it is in the air.
  • You can be fined for keeping your Christmas decorations up past January 14.
  • It is state law to take shotguns to church just in case Native Americans attack.
  • It’s against the law in Augusta to walk down the street playing the violin.
  • In Biddeford, it is illegal to gamble at the airport, as well as roller skate on any of the town’s sidewalks.
  • Mercury thermometers are not permitted to be sold in the city of Freeport. It is also against the law to spit out of a second story window.
  • It is illegal in South Berwick to park in front of a Dunkin' Donuts.
  • In Waterboro, dog leashes over eight feet in length are against the law.
  • Feeding deer and placing advertisements in cemeteries is illegal in Wells.
