A Maine Forest Service Helicopter Made the Rescue Quick and Efficient

After rescuers assessed the man's medical condition, they determined that, since he was about halfway up the nearly vertical section of the trail, their best solution would be to call for assistance from the Maine Forest Service,  based in Orono. The Forest Service sent a helicopter to conduct a short-haul operation, which was used to transport the patient to a field near Sand Beach in Acadia National Park. A Bar Harbor Fire Department ambulance met the helicopter at the landing site and transported him to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor.

Other Hikers Were Not Inconvenienced for Long

The Beehive Trail was only closed for about an hour to allow for the rescue, and the scene was cleared at approximately 11:00.

The patient's name and the nature of the medical event were not disclosed.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
