A Madawaska man was sentenced in U.S. District Court today for his role in illegally importing methylphenidate (Ritalin) and alprazolam (Xanax) in Maine.

According to court records, 39-year old Tristan Nelson of Madawaska, recieved a package from the Philippines addressed to him at the Madawaska Post Office on February 22, 2017.

Nelson accepted the package at the post office which contained about 950 methylphenidate pills and about 450 alprazolam pills.

Nelson admitted to agents to purchasing the pills online and knew that the pills where shipped to him from the Philippines to Maine and that he intended to distribute them.

On March 7, 2018, Nelson pleaded guilty in a court of law.

He faces one and a half years in prison and three years of supervised release for the crime.

The investigation was conducted by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Postal INspection Service, and the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
