A man who shot himself next to a car containing a deceased woman has died of his injuries.

Where Did This Happen?

Firefighters at the Lisbon Falls Fire Station on Main Street walked out of the building at approximately 7:00 Friday morning after hearing a woman scream. When they reached the street, they witnessed a man step away a vehicle and shoot himself in the head with a handgun. Additional emergency crews were called to the scene and transported Benjamin Peterson, 38, of Pittston to Central Maine Medical Center in critical condition.

Have Police Released the Victim's Identity?

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says when emergency responders went to the vehicle Peterson had just exited, they found a deceased woman in the driver's seat. Her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy was performed. The Medical Examiner's Office identified her as Kylee Turcotte, 30, of Lisbon Falls and ruled her death a homicide. Officials say Turcotte and Peterson were in a former relationship together.

Was This An Isolated Incident?

The lower portion of Main Street was shut down for several hours while Detectives with the Maine State and Lisbon Police Departments investigated the scene. Officials say this is an isolated incident and that there's no threat to the public. It remains under investigation.
