Today begins the long holiday weekend for New Brunswickers. Thanksgiving is a time for family, fun, food, and thankfulness and is celebrated this weekend.

Thanksgiving, or as they would say in New Brunswick, "Action de grace", is a time where people celebrate the harvest and the blessings of the last year.

As history would have it, the first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place around 1578, at the time of Englishman Martin Frobisher's voyage.

The first Thanksgiving Day, after Canadian Confederation was observed as a civic holiday on April 5, 1872, to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales, (later King Edward VII) from a serious illness.

Even though Thanksgiving Day falls on Monday, New Brunswickers can celebrate anytime and anywhere within the long weekend.

We hope you have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving, New Brunswick!
