A Winterville man escaped serious injury after he swerved to avoid a moose and crashed his pickup truck Saturday on Route 11 just north of Portage.

The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office received a call at around 12:15 p.m. from OnStar® reporting a single-vehicle crash in the area of Soucy Hill in T14-R6.

Police say 36-year-old James Camp, Jr. of Winterville Plantation was driving a 2013 GMC Sierra pickup northbound on Route 11 when a moose entered the roadway.

Camp was able to avoid the moose but lost control of the pickup and went down an embankment and crashed into the trees, according to Sheriff Shawn Gillen. Camp complained of minor pain but refused medical attention.

Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Erica Pelletier was the investigating officer. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Saucier’s in Eagle Lake.
