Sure, we were kind of behind when it came to certain trends, especially in the northern part of the state, but we were lucky enough to live in a state where an eight or ten year old could go off adventuring on their own.  Personally, I can remember, as a ten year old, hopping on my bike at 7 AM and not going home until dark.  When I was in high school, I was often out with friends until well after midnight.  Even though I had the opportunity to get into trouble, I never did.  Neither did any of my friends.  Before we all had smartphones and social media, we spent a lot more time outside.  That was true for all of us, whether we were ten or eighteen.
