I remember when I was a 'tween' it was all about skateboarding, girls, and music on the radio. I came up in the 80s and there was a huge divide between mainstream rock and new wave and straight pop music. But to this day, I remember the very first album I bought with my own money. It was actually a cassette.

You had your boy groups like New Kids on the Block and New Edition, and your teen-idol-pop bands like Duran Duran and Wham. You also had the rock bands left over from the 70s like Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen. I like catchy, big choruses with pop sensibilities but it also had to rock. I've mentioned who my favorite artist was as a kid and I used to be ashamed but everyone knows now that it was Rick Springfield.

My first album was 'Working Class Dog,' and I remember playing it so much one summer that my 'boombox' ate the tape and I had to save up to buy another one. That's the theme for today's show.
