Settlement in Maine Lawsuit Against DeCoster

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — There’s been a settlement in a lawsuit by a former plant manager against Austin ‘‘Jack’’ DeCoster over his egg operations in Maine.

Homero Ramirez, who was born in Mexico and lives in Lewiston, contended DeCoster discriminated based on age, race and national origin. The lawsuit also claimed violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the federal Family Medical Leave Act.

His lawyer, Benjamin Gideon, said Wednesday that settlement is confidential.

An attorney for DeCoster couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

Ramirez contends he was ordered to hire only Mexicans because they were willing to do dangerous or demeaning tasks. He also said he was forced to do dangerous work and was discouraged from receiving medical care.
