Today is my mother’s birthday.  It’s a milestone that she doesn’t want to talk about.  I really don’t see the problem.  I’ve got a milestone birthday coming up in December and you don’t see me making a fuss – yet.  She even went so far as to tell her grandchildren not to call her today.

She said that if we wanted to wish her a happy birthday we could do it the day before (yesterday) or tomorrow.  Today she was not going to answer the phone or go anywhere.  She was going to hold up in her home and shut off the outside world.  It may be a milestone for her but is this really necessary?  She said that for some reason this birthday bothers her more than turning 40 or 50 did.  Woops!  Did I just give away her age?

So what did we do for her on her birthday?  Well, we’re respecting her wishes to some extent.  She’ll be getting a big surprise either tonight or tomorrow, but we’ve called her every hour on the hour and wished her answering machine a happy birthday.  And did I mention that I sit in front of a microphone from 3pm-6pm on 101.9 FM?  Yeah, I’m going there.  Happy birthday Mommy!
