The day where everyone annoyingly decides they’re of Irish descent and that green beer is a good idea is just around the corner.  Here’s a few helpful tips so as not to offend the real deal.

It’s an easy mistake to make, but it’s one that drives the Irish, or those of Irish decent, bonkers!  Abbreviating St.Patrick’s Day with the term ‘St.Patty’s Day’ seems logical, but it is very, very incorrect.  The correct way to abbreviate is ‘St.Paddy,’ which is derived from the Irish Pàdraig, which is where the d’s come from.  A ‘patty’ is a hamburger.

Most people, especially in North America, don’t care why this day is even celebrated.  They set St.Patrick’s Day aside as a day to drink and be merry and to celebrate Irish heritage.  After all, St.Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland and March 17th was the day he died.  However, many of the celebrations of Irish heritage we partake in are anything but Irish.  St.Patrick, by the way, was British not Irish.  Oh, and a shamrock is not a four leaf clover.  It has three leaves to represent the Holy Trinity.  You’re welcome.
