The UMaine women's basketball team opened their America East Conference schedule with a dud. A 55-52 loss at Vermont.

The Black Bears jumped out to a 13-3 start but the Catamounts regrouped and outscored Maine 15-3 in the second quarter and led 23-16 at the half.

UVM never trailed in the second half.

The Bears did make a late comeback and pulled within a point down the stretch but Vermont hit enough free throws to hold off Maine.

Laia Sole led the Bears with 21 points. Maine was playing without Sigi Koizar who has a leg injury.

Kylie Butler led UVM with 12.

Maine drops to 7-9 (0-1 AE). Vermont is now 4-9 (1-0 AE).
