Trooper Saucier was traveling South on Route 212 and slowed at the intersection of Route 2. Saucier did not see any approaching vehicles due to the glaring sun and proceeded into the intersection, police said.

Thomas Ewing was traveling East on Route 2 in his 2008 Dodge Van and did not see the cruiser. Trooper Saucier swerved to avoid Ewing, but was unable to avoid the collision.

84-year-old Judith Ewing was a passenger with her husband in the van. Thomas bumped his head and complained of pain, but refused medical attention and Judith was not injured in the crash, according to the police.
