Last week, my fiancé and I set out on a journey to hike to the summit of Mount Washington.

I had done it a couple of times before, so I knew firsthand how grueling of a trek it can be. We did our homework, and we were prepared.

When we reached the summit, we spent quite a bit of time exploring.

One thing that caught my attention was a list that included the names of all of the people who have died climbing the mountain. I found this list of names online in a few places, but it looks like the most up to date list can be found at this Wikipedia page.

It includes names, dates, and specific causes of death.

According to NH Magazine, there have been a total of 161 fatalities on Mount Washington since 1849. That's a relatively high number, almost half the number of people who have died attempting to climb Mount Everest.

The most common causes of death on the mountain include falls, hypothermia, and heart attacks.

The risk of tragedy when climbing Mount Washington is well known. Backpack.com names it one of America's Ten Most Dangerous Hikes.

There was even a book published last year that documents all of the fatalities there - “Death on Mount Washington: Stories of Accidents and Foolhardiness on the Northeast’s Highest Peak.”

If my fiancé had known about all of this, I'm sure she would have changed her mind about doing it!

But all kidding aside, I would encourage anyone who's in good physical shape to give it a shot. But please, take it seriously. It's not easy. It will test you both physically and mentally. Research the mountain, check the latest weather conditions, and be prepared with essential supplies.
