Maine State Police say 11 vehicles were involved in a crash on Route 1 in Cyr Plantation Tuesday morning, and several people were injured including Van Buren’s Police Chief.

Strong winds led to severe whiteout conditions at the scene of the crash.  According to Trooper Adam Stoutamyer, there were two Maine Dept. of Transportation plow trucks involved, along with seven passenger cars, one pickup truck and a Van Buren police cruiser that was undamaged.

One DOT operator was struck and injured while he was on foot. Van Buren Police Chief Michael Bresette, who was one of the first emergency responders on the scene, was also struck after he got out of his cruiser. He suffered multiple broken bones. After being struck, Brisette dragged himself out of the road to avoid being struck a second time by an oncoming truck, police say.

Van Buren Ambulance Service transported the injured to Cary Medical Center in Caribou for treatment.

The Van Buren Police Department, Maine Warden Service, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Department of Transportation, and the Van Buren and Cyr Plantation Fire Departments all assisted at the scene.
