ROAD TRIP WORTHY: Enchanting Castle Ruins in the New Hampshire Woods Will Amaze You
Madame Sherri's Castle Ruins
West Chesterfield, NH
Imagine taking a hike into the gorgeous New Hampshire woods. The trees are thick and the leaves crunch beneath you. After navigating the beautiful trail, you spot a clearing in the woods ahead of you. Among the trees, a mysterious stone staircase rises from the earth and leads to nowhere.
The staircase once belonged to the infamous Madame Antoinette Sherri's Castle. The castle has long since disappeared after decades of vandalism and neglect, but some of the original stone structures, including this staircase, still remain.
Madame Sherri was a costume designer in the 1920s. She chose to build her "castle" in the Chesterfield woods as a place to throw extravagant parties for her guests.
With extravagant parties comes extravagant costs, which eventually led to Madame Sherri's funds running dry. Her beloved chateau was left behind. Nature took over where vandals left off. Whatever remained was destroyed in a fire. The walls of the magnificent castle disappeared leaving only the stone elements standing.
Find the remains of Madame Sherri's Castle in the Chesterfield Woods and climb the stone staircase for yourself. Legend has it that Madame Sherri still wanders the woods keeping an eye on her special home in the forest.
