The Boston Red Sox used 7 bullpen pitchers and Mitch Moreland hit a 3 run homer on his 34th birthday as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees 6-1 at Fenway Park on Friday, September 6th.

Jhoulys Chacin made his first appearance for Boston, starting the game and was brilliant. He struck out 4 and didn't walk a batter or allow a hit in 2 innings. From there Josh Taylor, Marcus Walden, Andrew Cashner, Ryan Weber, Darwinzon Hernandez and Bobby Poyner combined for 9 strikeouts. Cashner allowed the run on a homer to Brett Gardner. Walden was credited with the win and is 9-2 on the season.

Moreland ended the night 3-4. Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts each had 1 hit, with each hitting their 49th double of the season.

The Red Sox are 6 games back from the final wild card spot. Their "tragic number" for elimination from the playoffs is 16.

Weather permitting, the Red Sox and Yankees will play the 2nd game of their 4 game series Saturday afternoon. Travis Lakins will make the start for the Red Sox as they will throw another "bullpen" game. They currently have 21 pitchers on the major league roster.
