The Boston Red Sox beat the San Diego Padres on Saturday, August 24th as Brock Holt, hit a game winning homer in the top of the 9th inning, to give the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over San Diego. The Red Sox had led 4-0 before the Padres stormed back to tie the game.

Nathan Eovaldi started for the Red Sox and lasted only 3 innings. He allowed 4 hits, 2 runs striking out 3 and walked 1. Marcus Walden allowed 1 run on 1 hit in the 4th inning. Darwinzon Hernandez pitched a scoreless 5th inning. Ryan Brasier allowed 1 run in 1.1 inning. Josh Taylor allowed 1 hit in .2 innings. Matt Barnes pitched a scoreless 8th inning picking up the win, and Brandon Workman pitched the 9th, striking out the side, but walking 2.

Mookie Betts was 2-5 with a double, his 38th. Christian Vazquez was 2-4 with a double, his 23rd. Mitch Moreland was 2-4.

The Red Sox are now 70-61, 6 games behind the 2nd wild card spot. The "tragic number" for elimination to the playoffs is 6 games
