Going into Thursday night's game the Red Sox were 9-1 in their last 10 games on "getaway" days, as well as being 14-7 in series finales this season, including 12-3 in their last 15! Plus, they had David Price pitching, who was 4-1 with a 1.88 ERA in his last 9 starts.

But David Price was shelled. He lasted only 1.1 innings allowing 5 hits, a season high 6 earned runs, hitting 2 batters and striking out 2. He left trailing 6-1 and the game was turned over to the bullpen.

7 Red Sox relievers held the Rangers scoreless, allowing just 4 hits the rest of the game and Josh Smith picked up his 1st major league save, pitching the 9th.

Meanwhile the Red Sox bats came alive, hitting 5 homers, their most in a game since September 26, 2018 when they also hit 5 against the Orioles.

JD Martinez started the home run barrage hitting his 13th of the season in the 1st inning. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit his 6th of the season, a 3 run shot in the 2nd inning. Michael Chavis hit his 11th of the season, another solo homer in the 4th. In the 5th inning, Rafael Devers hit his 10th of the season, another solo homer. The game winner came off the bat of Xander Bogaerts in the 7th inning, his team leading 14th of the season. Martinez's, Devers' and Bogaerts' homers came with 2 out.

The win, combined with the Yankees and Tampa Bays loss moves the Red Sox to 6.5 games behind 1st (Yankees) with a 36-34 record. The Red Sox open a 3 game series in Baltimore against the Orioles on Friday night, with Eduardo Rodriguez scheduled to take the mound for Boston.
