Presque Isle’s Community Center Torn Down [PHOTOS]

After 70 years of memorable events, dances and activities, Presque Isle's William V. Haskell Community Center was torn down Thursday and Friday.

Clean up will continue at the site. The pictures above show the crews working on the rec center demolition yesterday and today. Kirk Carroll of Carroll’s Auto Sales owns the property and will use the lot for expansion of the auto dealership.

The building started as a USO club and became the Presque Isle Recreation Center in 1946. William Haskell ran the department for 35 years as Maine & Presque Isle’s first full-time recreation director. It was named the William V. Haskell Community Center after him In 1987.

The new facility,The Sargent Family Community Center, will keep the history and tradition alive. Pictures and memorabilia from the old rec center are on display at the new one.
