Police on Monday released additional details on a dog attack that killed a young boy in Corinna over the weekend.

The victim was identified as Hunter Bragg, 7, of Bangor, the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office said at a news conference on Monday.

Police responded to 207 Moody Mills Road in Corinna concerning a dog attack shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday. The boy was already dead when police arrived.

Hunter was playing in the yard with two other children when he was attacked by an adult male pit bull, officials said. Hunter's father, 35-year-old Jason Bragg, was at the residence at the time of the attack.

The dog's owner was identified as Gary Merchant, 45. After the attack, Merhcant requested that the dog be euthanized by a local veterinarian, according to police.

The incident is still under investigation, and police declined to give further details including whether or not the dog was tethered at the time of the attack.

Hunter was a student at the Downeast School in Bangor.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help with Hunter's funeral expenses.
