A 33-year-old Prince Edward Island man has been charged in connection with a September home invasion and armed robbery in Saint-Basile, New Brunswick, that sent a man and a woman to hospital.

Just before 7 p.m. on September 16 the Saint-Léonard RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at a home on Chemin Riviere-Verte, according to Sgt. Michel Ouellette.

Investigators determined a man entered the home and demanded money from the residents. The male resident was stabbed with a knife by the suspect and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. The woman was also taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Shawn Casey Smith, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., appeared in Edmundston Provincial Court on October 30 and was charged with two counts of robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, being unlawfully in a dwelling-house, and breach of probation.

Smith was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on January 11, 2019 in Edmundston Provincial Court.
