A portion of Route 69 in Newburgh is closed down for the rest of the day, authorities say, as they actively work to clear up debris from a serious accident that occurred earlier this morning. The section of road that is currently blocked runs from Route 202 to the North Road.

According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, the crash took place just before noon on Wednesday.

"The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene of a serious traffic crash involving a tractor-trailer truck and a sports passenger car. At 1155 hours, the Penobscot Regional Communication Center received several reports of a serious head-on collision on Route 69 in Newburgh. Details about those involved are not going to be released as deputies work diligently with the family."

The Sheriff's Department tells us that the road in that area will be blocked off for a while, possibly into the evening, so they can reconstruct the scene and clear away debris from the roadway.

There's no word yet on what the truck was hauling.

They are asking drivers to avoid the area as the investigation continues, and advise motorists should seek another route around that section of the road for the foreseeable future.

They say they will not be releasing any other details at the moment, as it is an active investigation and they don't want to jeopardize it.
