In the capital of New Brunswick, motorcyclists or now concerned that a suggested extension of a Fredericton noise ordinance could put the proverbial banana in their tail pipe.

That’s because a proposed redraft of the noise bylaw – set at a limit of 92 decibels - includes motorcycles, which the city council hopes will tame some of the more disturbing bikers blasting down the streets with overly raucous exhaust systems.

"What we're concerned about is modifications to vehicles that — you know, aftermarket exhausts principally for both cars, trucks, motorcycles — that do cause undue noise," said Deputy Mayor Stephen Chase.

However, motorcyclists with factory exhausts are surpassing the current limit, which has many area bikers opposing the revised ordinance due to its unfairness – asking the city council to be more flexible with the ordinance’s decibel levels.

As it stands, motorcyclists that violate the noise bylaw could receive a fine of up to $250 and loss of license plates.
