Former UMaine hockey captain Jim Montgomery and his UDenver Pioneers will be the overall #1 seed for the NCAA Hockey Tournament. His team enters to playoffs with a 29-7-4 record.

Denver won the NCHA regular season title but lost to North Dakota in the semi-final round of the conference playoffs.

Montgomery helped UMaine to a first-ever national title in 1992-93 and he is still the all-time points leader for the Black Bears.

He is in his fourth season behind the Denver bench. The Pioneers have made the tourney field in his first three season, including a Frozen Four appearance last year.

Denver will face off agaiinst Michigan Tech on Saturday at the Midwest Regional in Cincinnati.
