Police say 48-year-old Ned Ketchum of Mars Hill was driving north in a 2008 Ford F-150. Meanwhile, 59-year-old Wayne Cushman, also of Mars Hill, was operating a 2007 Kenworth tractor trailer unit with box trailer heading south.

Witnesses stated that the pickup crossed the center line into the path of the tractor trailer unit, according to Sgt. Jeff Clark. Cushman attempted to avoid the pickup but could not, Clark said.
