If you’re going to play on Maine waters, you had better stay dry.

As part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers surrounding boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Marine Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard will be beefing up patrols across Maine this summer.

Operation Dry Water, which is a national law enforcement program created by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, is set to get underway June 28-30, and is aimed at controlling the number of boaters out there riding drunk and high on Maine waterways.

National statistics show there were nearly 340 arrests and 4,500 citations made last year as a result of people boating under the influence.

Law enforcement officials say that the blood alcohol limit for boaters is no different than people who operate motor vehicles – 0.08.
