The 4th of July and "Getaway" Day (the last game of the series) have proven to be good for the Red Sox. Going into July 4, 2019, the Red Sox had won 5 straight on July 4th and were 12-3 on "getaway" day. Things weren't looking good for the Red Sox, trailing 6-1 after 5 innings, but Boston scored 6 runs in the 6th and Marco Hernandez hit a pinch-hit homer in the top of the 9th to give Boston a 8-7 win over the Blue Jays.

The pinch-hit homer was the 1st of Hernandez's career.

Rafael Devers hit his 15th homer in the 1st inning and was 2-3, walking twice and is now batting .331. Michael Chavis hit a 3-run homer in the 6th, with 2 out, his 15th of the season. JD Martinez was 3-4

The Red Sox continue to have problems in the 5th starter position. Hector Velazquez was pulled after 2.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. Colten Brewer on in relief allowed 3 runs in 1.2 innings. But Josh Taylor, Ryan Brasier and Matt Barnes each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Brandon Workman ended up picking up the win after allowing the tying run in the bottom of the 8th

Prior to the game the Red Sox activated Heath Hembree from the Injured list, To make room for Hembree the club optioned Trevor Kelley to Pawtucket

The win puts Boston's record at 46-41 and they remain 11 games behind the 1st place Yankees who beat Tampa Bay 8-4 in 10 innings. The Red sox will open a 3 game series with the Tigers at Detroit on Friday, July 5th before the All-Star break. Eduardo Rodriguez is scheduled to start for Boston with the pregame beginning at 6:10 and 1st pitch at 7:10.
