In recognition of his incredible contributions to the world of country music and the common good alike, legendary songwriter Kris Kristofferson will be honored with the Woody Guthrie Prize.

Music Row reports that Kristofferson will be honored with the award on Tuesday, October 18 at Tulsa’s Brady Arts District. Now in its third year, the Woody Guthrie Prize honored blueswoman and civil rights activist Mavis Staples in 2015. In its inaugural year in 2014, the Prize honored environmentalist and folk singer Pete Seeger.

“With over 50 years of social activism as a voice for disenfranchised, Kris was an obvious choice to receive the 2016 Woody Guthrie Prize,” said Woody Guthrie Center Executive Director Deana McCloud in a statement. “It is an honor to recognize his incredible career and tireless work to make positive improvements in our society.”

This isn’t the first bit of good news that Kristofferson has received as of late. Just one week ago, Kristofferson revealed that the memory loss and other symptoms he had long suffered were side effects of Lyme disease, not Alzheimer’s or dementia as previously thought.

Despite his health concerns, Kristofferson will star alongside Trace Adkins in Traded, a Western set in the 1880s. He will also release his latest album, The Cedar Creek Sessions, sometime this month.
