BELFAST, Maine (AP) — A Maine judge has declared a woman competent to stand trial in the death of her 10-year-old daughter and allowed jury selection to proceed.

The death of Marissa Kennedy in February 2018 exposed failures in Maine’s child protection system.

Jury selection began Wednesday in Belfast in the trial of 34-year-old Sharon Carrillo on a charge of depraved indifference murder. The girl's stepfather is serving a 55-year sentence.

Prosecutors say the girl had been beaten for months before her death in February 2018 in Stockton Springs.
