Hulu Will Follow Netflix’s Lead With Offline Viewing Option
The streaming and cord-cutting markets could look very different in a few year’s time, but Netlfix took a huge leap forward in granting subscribers the ability to download and watch their favorite content without an internet connection. Now, it appears as if Hulu will follow suit, planning to roll out an offline option in the coming months.
As Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins tells AdWeek (h/t Polygon), one of the many features in development for Hulu’s future is indeed offline viewing through its app, though no exact timetable was given toward a launch. For the moment, Hulu is concentrating on the debut of its own streaming bundle, as well as a cloud-based DVR, while Hopkins said of offline viewing:
Yes, it’s definitely on our road map. It’s something that we’re going be doing in a few months. We’re working hard on the technology around that and getting the rights squared away.
At launch, Netflix’s version only had a select few shows and movies available to download through the service, hence Hulu’s intent on securing the rights before announcing anything official. Hulu has also not set a firm date for its streaming bundle, which is said to include access to Hulu’s regular streaming service, ringing up somewhere around $40.
We’ll have more details on Hulu’s new offerings soon, so stay tuned for the latest.
