This weekend animal shelters across the country will participate in Clear the Shelters Day in hopes of finding forever homes for the lost, forgotten, and surrendered animals who want nothing more than a human to cuddle up to at night, every night.

Animal shelters often struggle with over-crowding. It's difficult to help all of the homeless pets when the beds are full, so Clear the Shelters Day hopes to literally empty the shelters to make room for more needy pets.

In an effort to find homes for all of their current resident pets, shelters like the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland will lower or waive adoption fees for dogs, cats, kittens, and other critters.

If you want to add the love of an animal to your home, this weekend is the best opportunity to adopt a rescue animal. Your adoption will support the shelter's efforts to care for more homeless pets.
