Fatal Crash After Vehicle Goes Wrong Way on I-95

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Police in Maine say they are investigating why a woman drove her car in the wrong lane on Interstate 95, leading to a head-on collision that resulted in her own death.

Police say 22-year-old Sierra Prescott of Saco was killed instantly in the Saturday night crash in Augusta. They say she collided with two other cars in the crash. Forty-four-year-old Shuba Raja, a passenger in another car in the crash, was critically injured and flown by helicopter to a Lewiston hospital.

Police say the drivers of the two other cars in the crash were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The crash resulted in the northbound interstate lanes being shut down in Augusta for three hours.

Maine State Police say the northbound lanes on I-95 in Augusta were closed Saturday night following a fatal crash at mile 111.

Troopers said a vehicle going in the wrong direction struck another in the northbound lane. 22-year-old Sierra Prescott of Saco was killed and a second person was seriously injured. 44-year-old Shuba Raja was critically injured in the crash. She was a passenger the other car. Raja was flown by helicopter to a Lewiston hospital.

The head on crash happened around 9:30 pm between the Western Ave and Civic Center Drive exits in Augusta. Northbound traffic was detoured at Western Ave.

A team of troopers, assisted by Augusta Police and the Kennebec Sheriff's Office, is investigating the crash.
