Can You Think of at Least Four Fall Driving Hazards in Maine
Most drivers are probably not as good a driver as they think they are, but take extra care and precautions when driving in Maine in the winter time.
But what about Fall?
Fall has some driving hazards we may not think are as difficult as winter.
Number one on the list, and who among us hasn’t heard of someone we know having a hit when it comes to deer. They are graceful as they dart in and out, and very nice to watch. But if you collide with one on the road, it almost always leads to damage to your vehicle. Not to mention to the deer.
Deer are most active beginning this month, and especially around dusk and dawn. And they are hard to second guess. You may think they are going to turn and go back into the woods, or at least run parallel to your car, but no. They will cross the road right in front of you even as you are approaching at good speed.
And a bonus animal that likes to dance in front of your car. Wild Turkey.
They seem to travel in even bigger groups this year. Used to be a half dozen and now it seems like if you see one, you see a dozen.
Earlier Sunsets
The days are getting shorter. So we are driving more often in the dark. Obviously lots of accidents happen in the evening after the sun sets.
But don’t forget the sung setting, and maybe even more dangerous, the sun shining in our eyes as we drive
When driving this time of year, we need to watch out for school kids too. It just takes a quick second when a kid could forget about what they have been taught and excitedly forget they are near cars and jump in front of you..
Maybe some also need a tap on the shoulder that when a school bus stops in front of you, do not pass the bus.
Rain can be almost as slippery as ice
When the road is wet due to rain, it could get even more slippery as the leaves fall. Wet leaves on the road make it slicker, especially as you are going around tight corners.
Be safe. Make it a happy Fall.
