Deer Isle's Sam Grindle banged home a long birdie putt on the 16th hole to capture his first Maine Match Play Championship, beating Jack Wyman 3 &2 at the Waterville Country Club.

It was the second time this summer the two young golfers met for a state title. Last month, Wyman (Portland CC) scored the Maine Amateur win while Grindle was runnerup.

This time Grindle got him.

The Rollins College (Florida) golfer never trailed in the Match Play final after birdies on three of the first five holes. But, Grindle never had more than a two hole lead.

32 of the top amateurs in Maine began match play on Tuesday with only Grindle and Wyman still standing today.

The 22-year-old Grindle, who is a former high school state champion with Deer Isle-Stonington, heads back to college next week.
