Some of the best moments in life for musicians happen when the spotlight is not on them. Take, for instance, Dave Grohl, who shared "the most amazing experience of my entire life" while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday night (Aug. 2)

The Foo Fighters frontman and Nirvana drummer has previously spoken about his one-time jam session with Prince, but added a little more detail during his Kimmel visit this week. Back in 2011, the purple one played an amazing 21 nights at the Forum in Los Angeles and Grohl finally had a chance to meet the legend at one of the shows. According to Grohl, Prince invited him to come down and jam and said he'd call him about setting something up for a Friday, but then never called. So Grohl decided to visit a soundcheck to reconnect.

"He sees me and he says, 'What are you doing here?' And I said, 'Oh, I thought we were going to jam, Prince,'" recalls Grohl, so Prince offered him the choice of guitar or drums and asked him up onstage. "I sat down at this drum set and we started playing 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin and it was, I swear to God, it was the most amazing experience of my entire life ... and there was nobody there," said Grohl. Prince then invited Grohl to join him the following week, but as Grohl told it on Kimmel he had a school fundraiser he had committed to for his kids and he never heard from Prince again.

Grohl's latest Kimmel visit also included a few other fun moments, both onstage and off. Fans may recall Grohl stepping in to host the late night show last fall when Kimmel's son was having surgery and Grohl thanked Kimmel for the opportunity with a rather strange gift. That night, Foo Fighters jammed with Alice Cooper and Grohl lost his "head" via Cooper's guillotine. The fake severed Grohl head then became his gift to Kimmel and the reason why he gave up the disconcerting head is about as funny as Kimmel's attempt to find a place to put it. Watch the video below.

Grohl was on hand primarily to discuss his Play documentary about his 23-minute instrumental jam celebrating his love and dedication to playing musical instruments. The musician also talked up Cal Jam '18, which the band will be putting on this fall for the second consecutive year. Backstage, Grohl got to partake a photo opportunity that could go viral, posing with Huey Lewis in shot captured, "Huey Lewis and the Foo(s)."
