One of the most popular NASCAR drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr., says after this race season he will retire. Earnhardt, who is 42 years old, said he wanted to make the decision himself rather than be forced out for health concerns.

Dale Jr. missed half of last season because of a concussion, which was his second in 4 years. According to nytimes.com, Earnhardt will go down as one of the most popular drivers in the sports history receiving the ‘most popular driver award’ 14 times is a row.

Dale Jr. has not won a race since 2015 and his best finish this season is fifth. He is 24th in the standings.
