History enthusiasts will get an opportunity this summer to discover the crucial role the state of Maine had during the American Civil War.

Organizers of the Maine Civil War Trail, consisting of nearly 23 museums and historical societies across the state, are in the process of putting together their group’s contribution to the program that will tell the story of how the Civil War affected Maine.

Area historical directors hope that the Maine Civil War Trail will help educate the public as to exactly what Maine went through during those extremely dark years.

"How large an effect that the civil war had on Maine…its citizens...the growth...the industrialization after the war. It's just a really big picture," said Megan Pinette, president of the Belfast Historical Society and Museum.

The trail will serve to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg, which lead to the deaths of nearly 51,000 soldiers.
