Shia LaBeouf would not be my first choice to play tennis pro John McEnroe; but hey, I’m not the guy making a movie about the rivalry between him and Björn Borg. The movie, the appropriately titled Borg/McEnroe, is actually a Swedish production (Borg’s from Sweden), with Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason as Borg. And, yes, as you can see in the trailer above, that is Mr. LaBeouf as Mr. McEnroe.

The real Borg and McEnroe had one of most storied rivalries in the history of tennis. They battled, evenly matched, through the late ’70s and early 1980s. The one issue with this movie, for me, is that its parody already exists: The tremendous Andy Samberg movie 7 Days in Hell, which is so incredibly funny. Go watch that while you’re waiting for this movie (there’s no U.S. release date set yet). Here’s the official synopsis (at least according to Google Translate):

It is the year 1980. Wimbledon is under the sign of the world-wide finale between Björn Borg and John McEnroe. The Swedish number 1, gentleman, the control in person, against the eccentric newcomer from New York. The Nordic coolness against the US hot-head. But these two sizes of white sport, they are much closer than one might believe. An unforgettable final is stored in the minds of the spectators. Borg and McEnroe: Former rivals and best enemies.

That’s not quite right, but I like it, particularly the part about the Nordic coolness against the US hot-head. I would watch the hell out of that movie.
