All’s Not Right Red Sox Lose to Blue Jays 10-4

The Boston Red Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 on Tuesday, July 17th as newly acquired Andrew Cashner struggled in his Red Sox debut.

Cashner, who was 9-3 for Baltimore pitched 5 innings allowing 6 runs on 8 hits. He gave up 2 homers and struck out 2 while walking 2. Heath Hembree didn't get a out in the 9th inning, allowing 3 runs and Ryan Weber allowed 1 more run in the 9th before retiring the Blue Jays.

The night started off well for Boston, as Xander Bogaerts hit his 21st homer in the bottom of the 1st inning, to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

After Toronto led 4-1, Boston tied the score 4-4 in the bottom of the 5th, but the Blue Jays took the lead for good scoring 2 runs in the top of the 6th.

Xander Bogaerts ended the night 3-4 with 2 runs batted in. He joined Ted Williams as only the 2nd play in Red Sox history to record at least 1 hit, 1 run and 1 RBI in 8 straight games.

Mookie Betts was 3-5 with 2 RBIs and has scored at least 1 run in each of his last 11 games , the longest streak since Kevin Youkilis did so in 2006

Earlier in the day the Boston Red Sox recalled left handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez from Triple A Pawtucket and optioned right handed pitcher Ryan Brasier to Pawtucket

With the Yankees win over Tampa Bay, the Red Sox are now 10 games out of 1st place and 3 games out of the wild card. Boston will play Toronto Wednesday night in the 3rd game of the 4 game series with the pregame starting at 6:10 and 1st pitch at 7:10. Eduardo Rodriguez is scheduled to start for Boston.
